Collective soul songs plus#
In August 2022, Collective Soul released its latest album, “Vibrating,” plus two additional studio albums are finished and ready for release whenever the time is right. It’s a very comforting situation to be in.”Īnd Roland has written quite a few songs lately. They make suggestions and things like that. They want to know what the lyrics are about. “And they’re so cool about when I present the songs to them. “I think it’s just taken so much pressure off of me to really just focus (on songwriting),” he continued. “I don’t have to worry about anything other than writing songs and making sure I sing them well because I know for a fact Jesse’s going to do his part, Johnny’s going to do his part, Dean’s going to do his part, Will’s going to do his part and I don’t have to stretch myself so thin,” Roland said, mentioning the other two original members of Collective Soul, his brother, guitarist Dean Roland and bassist Will Turpin. To the founding singer-guitarist, the arrival of drummer Johnny Rabb in 2012 and guitarist Jesse Triplett two years later reinvigorated Collective Soul and has made his job much easier. But when you really listen to the band, it is not all dark, sad, depressing music like Grunge (you know its true – Grunge is pretty damn depressing, not fun at all music). This was slab dab in the middle of that era and I can see why people thought they were a Grunge band as I even labeled them as that when I heard it. The second problem was due to the song sounding like a Grunge song with its distorted guitar sounds and dark feel of the song. It did pigeoned-holed the band a little to be lumped in to Christian music. As Ed Roland likes to point out, Led Zeppelin had “heaven” in one of their songs and no one called them a Christian band. They are a genuine article rock band who happened to sing a song with heaven in the title. This caused people to think the band was a so called “Christian” band and let me tell you they are not. First was the fact the song mentioned the word Heaven in the song and the chorus does come across as very church-like and almost sounding like a prayer. The song also caused problems for the band that were unexpected. The song came out in 1993 and was such a big hit for them as it went #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as winning a Billboard Award for Top Rock Track in 1994. The song was the debut single of the band and their debut album ‘Hints, Allegations and Things Left Unsaid’. And why not kick it off with the song that jump started the band to stardom…”Shine”.
